On April 13, 2017, representatives of UNICEF India and LDS Charities toured the community of Bhiwandi, a northern suburb of Mumbai. UNICEF is making a great impact on increasing the number of immunizations throughout India and especially in minority communities like Bhiwandi, a Muslim minority community. In some communities, there is a lot of mis-information and lack of knowledge regarding immunizations. There are also some occasional cultural hurdles which need to be addressed in order to win the trust of the entire population; mothers, fathers, healthcare providers and administrators, community and religious leaders and certainly the hearts and minds of the children.
LDS Charities guide on this day was Ms. Harsha Mehta, Communication and Development Officer out of the Mumbai office for UNICEF India. Ms. Lalita Sachdeva from the New Delhi office of UNICEF and Brother S.V. Sunil, director of Indian LDS Charities, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were also part of the entourage.
"A key to our progress has been the invaluable deployment of several These young women, most of them young mothers themselves, visit every home in the community, keep track of births and pending births, make an immunization chart for each child, educate and encourage families to have their babies immunized and stay current with follow-up injections", said Ms. Harsha Mehta. Also key in this densely populated Muslim community are the several Mawlana or spiritual leaders, who have seen the importance of this program to safeguard their children against disease.
UNICEF and LDS Charities were also honored to meet Dr. Yogesh Mhase, Commissioner, Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation and Dr. Vidya Shetty, Medical Officer Health (MOH), Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation.
After spending most of the day in the field, the LDS Charity leaders were given a short presentation by Ms. Rajeshwari Chandrasekar, Chief of the Mumbai office for UNICEF.
