Hyderabad Youth Give Helping Hands

The Hyderabad youth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints  joined together in work and laughter to help a neighborhood school.  The Government Girls High School in West Marredpally is located close to the Hyderabad chapel.  As good neighbors, the youth and their leaders chose the school for a Helping Hands Project.

“It was great to see our youth painting the walls since no one had done this before” said Shekar Alamury, a member of the congregation and the Public Affairs Media Specialist.  The youth mixed the white wash powder in water and painted all the interior corridors. In addition, each of the classrooms were cleaned and put in order again.  Everyone enjoyed being together and accomplishing such a good service project for the school. The school has 360 students and a staff of 18.  The school staff was “astonished” with the wonderful work that was done and impressed with the quality of the youth.  Everyone had a happy attitude and each person did their share.  The whitewashing was the “fun” part and the youth all took turns using the brushes.

The leader of the regional congregation, President John Gutty said “We are so happy for such an effort done by our youth” as he looked at the finished painted and cleaned school.  Following the Helping Hands project, the youth gathered to share their feelings about the service project and their testimonies. Pulla Jakaria, the Public Affairs director for the Hyderabad congregation also joined the project along with Prasad Seerapu, the Young Men’s president. Service to others is an important principle for the members of the LDS Church and the youth were grateful for the opportunity to serve their neighboring school.

The Mormon Helping Hands program brings together members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their neighbors to provide community service. These volunteers in their trademark yellow shirts also help people whose lives have been affected by natural disasters and other emergencies.
