In an effort to empower the women of the Aler District, north east of Hyderabad, LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined forces with Madam Sunitha Reddy, Member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, to create a sewing training center. While the government has provided the building and the instructor, LDS Charities has provided the sewing machines and chairs.
The new facility is located in the village of Vangapally were an estimated one thousand women will learn tailoring skills over the next year, enabling them to earn a wage to improve their economic situation and that of their families.
An inauguration ceremony was held on March 22 which included Shekar Alamury from the Church as well as Sudhakar Goud, a local business man, and Gongidi Mahender Reddy, husband of the MLA. Women of the Aler District were also present to celebrate the new facility.
The project, initiated by Madam Sunitha, is typical of those undertaken by LDS Charities which seeks to support and assist local organizations, such as the government of Telangana State, as they solve the problems and meet the needs of their communities.
