The northern Indian state of Bihar, which borders Nepal, receives approximately 1.5 meters of natural rainfall per year. In August 2017, one area of Bihar received 50% of that annual average over a 15 day period. August is the normal monsoon season in Bihar, but the heavy rain accumulated quickly as even more rain from neighboring Nepal came into the devastated area as the flood waters raced to the Gunga (Ganges) River.
850,000 people lost their homes and over 500 people died as a result of the floods. While Bihar is no stranger to these kinds of floods, the summer of 2017 took a heavier toll than in recent years.

LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in partnership with ADRA, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (India), worked together in assessing the needs of the hard-hit communities and providing crucial items to help those hit hardest by the rain and the floods.
Thousands of items, such as tarps for temporary shelters, ground sheets, medicated mosquito nets, water accessories kits and hygiene kits, were donated and delivered by LDS Charities and ADRA. The precious items were distributed among those most in need and were received with gratitude and graciousness.
